I know that I do not have many dealings with the KZN Clubs anymore but I would like to take the opportunity that thank everyone that I have spoken to for their assistance during 2011 and wish you a wonderful Christmas holiday period.

Please note that the KZN office will be closed from Wednesday 14th December until Wednesday 4th January. My office hours will remain the same in January (08h30 to 12h30) for licencing so please advise your competitors. Due to the construction on site of Blue Heights Centre it would also be advisable if competitors could go online to do their licences due to the lack of parking in the area.

Sierra Ranch spoilt me – arrived late on Friday night and they still managed to find a plate of food for me – five star service.

The race was set on a huge farm that we crisscrossed end-to-end. Just to keep everyone honest, the 30 km loop had 10 control points at which one had to stamp a race card.

The weather was perfect, cool and overcast with a threat of rain, which thankfully, did not materialise. The coarse setters made good use of the available terrain taking us to some rather usual places.

We started off on a pleasant sight seeing section through some fields and down a little stream. Did not take long till we were taken to the Mooi River. Nothing too bad and did not even have to ride in the river, rather having to climb out up an insane rock bank. Sat in amazement watching bikes being dropped and riders pushing and pulling to make some headway. Marshalls desperately helping riders. Thought this was going to be the end of my race, struggled to make any headway. Dropped my bike several times and almost flipped the bike backwards. Shaken would be an understatement.

Thankfully this was one of the more challenging sections. We did unfortunately head straight back to the river for a tiny section of rocks in the river and a nice little climb to get out again.

Then we made our way to ‘the hill’ called Five Roses. Did not know they could find something so difficult – we seemed to ride for hours zig zagging, pulling and pushing and just generally fighting over every rock to reach the top. By this time I was done and needed medical attention – no one was around who cared and onwards I had to ride. We then rather surprisingly seemed to spend a fare amount of time ridding on twisty tracks – sanity slowly returned until we had the pleasure of some scary downhills. Way too technical for me rather opting to walk my bike down than take the chance of going over my bars.

At the opposite side of the farm we went past a cell phone tower and down a hill, only to go straight back up again. – thanks for the tour! Back to some fields and the occasional rocky bit.

A section of a motocross track and another stream to ride up and then around a corner one suddenly could hear music from the pits – almost home.

The timekeepers would hear nothing about how tired I was or that I did not have enough fuel or was almost dehydrated, no, no, I had to do another lap.

Went out again and nothing was easier, did seem to care less though. Dropped my bike a few times out of pure exhaustion. Back at the pits before the time-bar and in a moment of insanity went out for a third lap. Did things become complicated. Just staying upright was a challenge – nothing any easier and everything seemed to take forever. Somehow made my way around again, thankfully, rewarded with my first finish at a WFO.

Done one, guess will have to try and finish again, at least, only next year.

Well done and huge applause to WFO for a more-than-challenging year – tried all six rounds. I will be back.
